Tips for UMD Sorority Recruitment 2013

By Mel DeCandia on January 28, 2013

The start of a new semester is always exciting, but for girls intending on joining Greek life and engaging in spring recruitment, it can be a bit overwhelming and stressful. Luckily, remembering a few tips can make a huge difference. Read on to find out what you can do to have the best recruitment experience possible!

1) Follow the rules –Panhellenic Association rules require Potential New Members (PNMs) to refrain from speaking to sorority girls, and suggest PNMs wear certain clothes for each round of recruitment. While this may seem a little extreme, they actually help to ensure an even playing field for all PNMs. Additionally, disobeying these rules are grounds from removal from recruitment altogether, so it’s definitely important to be aware of them.

2) Don’t be afraid to ask questions –Interactions with sorority girls aren’t interviews, they’re a conversation. You should feel comfortable engaging in a dialogue with them, and learning more about the sisters individually. Asking about certain chapter’s philanthropies, sisterhood events or even the sorority house are all good conversation starters!

3) Keep an open mind –Many girls who begin recruitment thinking they know what sorority is ‘best’ for them based on other’s opinions will end up disappointed. While it may sound cliché, if you’re willing to enter recruitment unbiased and give each sorority an equal chance, it will be easier for you to find the sorority that works, not for your friends, but for you.

4) Have fun –Recruitment is supposed to be an enjoyable experience, so try not to let the strict schedule or long days get you down. While free time during recruitment may be fleeting, use it to the best of your abilities as an opportunity to meet new people, whether it is a sorority sister, your Rho Gamma or fellow PNMs.

5) Be yourself –At the end of the day, you’ll be looking to find a sorority where you can feel at home. Don’t put on a front- be yourself and you’re most likely to find a sorority that accepts and embraces you for who you are.
