5 Best Boots for Fall

By Khadija Dukes on September 16, 2014

As the leaves begin to change color, it will soon be time to put away summery sandals and bring forth the fall boots. With so many options it can be hard to decide on just one pair to choose. Here, I offer five of the best fall boots to start off your cold weather wardrobe.

1. Booties

Booties are a staple for any woman’s wardrobe, and I’m not talking about the kind you put on a baby’s feet. Booties, which are typically high-heeled, hit just below the ankle. These boots are a great way to dress up any outfit and look perfect when paired with dark wash jeans or a cute dress. For the cooler months, booties can be worn with a sweatshirt and a mini skirt or a sweater dress paired with a fur vest.

2. Ankle Boots

Yes, there is a difference between ankle boots and booties. While booties tend to hit below the ankle, ankle boots hit one to four inches above the ankle. Ankle boots, unlike booties, are a bit more versatile as they feature low or high heels and can have skinny or chunky heels. Ankle boots are better for everyday wear and offer a more relaxed style than booties. Depending on the style of the ankle boot, these boots can be worn with anything, from a sweater and jeans to a skirt and tights.

3. Combat Boots

While the typical black combat boots can give the impression of 90s grunge, combat boots these days come in a variety of colors, patterns and fabrics. These boots are not only casual, but comfy as well. Combat boots look great with floral patterns–whether it be a dress, a hat, a skirt, or a top–as well as motorcycle jackets and chunky sweaters.

4. Riding Boots

Riding boots are a classy, casual type of boot. They can be over-the-knee or mid-calf length and usually come in black or some variation of brown or chestnut. Since these are riding boots, of course they look wonderful worn with jodhpurs. However, these boots also look great with jeggings or high-waisted jeans. For fall, these boots can be paired with long sleeved polos, a button-down shirt, a fair-isle or cable-knit sweater or a cozy cardigan.

5. Over-the-Knee Boots

Over-the-knee boots may seem a little intimidating, considering the catwoman, dominatrix connotation associated with them. However, these boots are not as intimidating as one may think. The best way to wear these boots is to stick to solid, neutral colors and stick with less shiny and less squeaky fabrics like suede. These boots are also much less intimidating when worn with either a small heel or no heel at all. Flat over-the-knee boots can be more casual, everyday wear, while heeled over-the-knee boots can dress up any outfit. The key to pulling off this style, however, is to keep your upper half fully covered and to not wear low-cut or revealing tops or dresses.

With these boots in your wardrobe, you will be all set for a dressy, nighttime look or for a casual look during the day.
